Hugh Birch State Park

We have now been in Fort Lauderdale for our second week of the tour.  My mom flew down for the weekend since my dad is travelling overseas and I never say no to an extra set of hands on tour!  The kids were so excited to see her.  On Thursday night we stayed right on the beach in downtown Fort Lauderdale but unfortunately it was too windy on Friday morning to enjoy our perfect location so we ventured to the Science Center for a couple of hours and learnt about Florida’s natural terrain and even took a simulated airboat ride.  I am glad Avalynn stayed outside with Grandma for that ride as it was quite bumpy and I’m pretty sure she would not have stayed in her seat.

On Saturday Jon and Emerson went out with a friend of his from college and his 4-year old son so the girls hit the mall, after all it is Black Friday weekend!  I think this was the largest mall we have ever seen, Sawgrass Mills.  We were exhausted just looking at it and the crowds were too overwhelming for us – I think I accidentally hit a few too many shins with the double stroller.
On Sunday Jon played at a church of God in Cooper City.  The kids, mom, and I went to the second service and it was such a lively worship service complete with the Young Adults choir to backup Jon during his worship time.  The service was 2 hours long, a bit on the long side which most of it we spent in the nursery.  We enjoyed a lunch with the worship pastor and his family and then back to the hotel for a nap before dinner.
The weekend ended too quickly and today we dropped off mom at the airport in the morning and spent a few hours exploring Hugh Birch State Park.  I read about this state park online and it was a lot of fun.  We only ran into one other couple (Canadians from Halifax) which was a nice change from the busy Thanksgiving Long weekend traffic we experienced over the past 4 days previous.  We took a tunnel to get to the beach and then spent some time at both playgrounds and had a nice picnic lunch overlooking the canal and very large houses complete each with their own yachts.  It was back to the hotel as Jon had a 2-hour drive to his Celebrate Recovery concert in Stuart for the evening.
